USB Loader GX Forwarder Channel (UNEO) — Install Guide

Launching USB Loader GX through the Homebrew Channel every time works, but most owners eventually want the loader on the System Menu like a normal channel. That is what the forwarder channel does: it is a small channel — title ID UNEO — that simply forwards to the loader files on your SD card or USB drive. The channel itself is not the loader. If you move or update the loader files, the same channel keeps working, because it only points at the expected location. This guide covers installing the correct forwarder for Wii or vWii, and setting the loader’s Return To option so exiting games brings you back to the loader instead of the System Menu.

Because a forwarder is installed as a WAD, this is a NAND-modifying step. It is a routine and widely used install, but it deserves the same care as any WAD install: use the correct file for your console type, and install it with a proper WAD manager as described here.

Before You Start — What You Need

  • USB Loader GX already installed and launching from the Homebrew Channel — verify that first using the Wii install guide or the vWii install guide. A forwarder cannot fix a broken base install.
  • The correct forwarder WAD for your console: Wii owners use Wii WAD — Mirror (Terabox); Wii U vWii owners use vWii WAD — Mirror (Terabox). Both links on this site are Terabox mirrors, labeled as such. The two WADs are not interchangeable.
  • YAWM ME (Yet Another WAD Manager ModMii Edition) to install the WAD: YAWM ME — Mirror (Terabox). Our full WAD safety guide is at Install WADs with YAWM ME.
  • An SD card with room for the WAD file in a wad folder at the root.
  • Recommended: a NAND backup (BootMii on Wii where available) before installing any channel.

Wii and vWii forwarders are different WADs: Installing the Wii forwarder WAD inside vWii — or the vWii WAD on a real Wii — is a classic cause of a broken channel and, in the worst cases, banner problems. Check which console you are holding before you download, and check the filename again before you install.

How the Forwarder Finds the Loader

The UNEO forwarder looks for the loader at the standard locations, starting with SD:/apps/usbloader_gx/boot.dol. That is why the base install guides are so strict about folder names: if the folder is renamed or nested one level too deep, the Homebrew Channel will not list the loader and the forwarder will not find it either. If your forwarder returns you to the System Menu immediately or shows a black screen, the first check is always that exact path on the SD card — not reinstalling the WAD. Keep the loader in the standard location and the forwarder stays useful across loader updates, including the r1283 update described in our update guide.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Confirm the base install launches. Start USB Loader GX from the Homebrew Channel and launch a game once. Do not proceed if this fails — fix the base install first, using the Troubleshooting hub if needed.
  2. Download the correct WAD for your console. Wii: the Wii WAD mirror link above. vWii: the vWii WAD mirror link above. Both are Mirror (Terabox) downloads, so expect the file host’s own pages and ads around the download button.
  3. Place the WAD on the SD card. Create a wad folder at the root of the SD card if one does not exist, and copy the forwarder WAD into it. Keep the filename unchanged so you can identify it in the manager list.
  4. Copy YAWM ME to the SD card. If YAWM ME is not already in your apps folder, extract its download and copy its app folder into SD:/apps/ so it appears in the Homebrew Channel.
  5. Launch YAWM ME from the Homebrew Channel. Select your SD card as the source when prompted, and browse to the wad folder.
  6. Select the forwarder WAD — and pause. Highlight the UNEO forwarder file and read the name on screen one more time. Confirm it matches your console type (Wii vs vWii) before confirming the install. This pause is the cheapest safety step in the whole guide.
  7. Install and wait for success. Confirm the install and let YAWM ME finish. Do not power off the console during a WAD install. Note any error message exactly if one appears rather than retrying blindly.
  8. Exit to the System Menu and test the channel. Leave YAWM ME, return to the System Menu, and find the new USB Loader GX channel. Launch it: you should land in the loader without opening the Homebrew Channel. Launch a game as a final test.
  9. Set Return To to UNEO inside the loader. In USB Loader GX, open Settings, find the Return To option, and set it to the USB Loader GX channel (UNEO). With this set, exiting a game returns you to the loader instead of dropping you to the System Menu, which is the behavior most channel users actually want.
  10. Optional: tidy the System Menu. Move the channel to a convenient position on the menu. If you use Priiloader autoboot later, the forwarder also becomes the piece Priiloader should boot — see the related guide below.

If the Channel Does Not Work

A channel that appears but returns to the System Menu almost always means the loader files are not where the forwarder looks: check SD:/apps/usbloader_gx/boot.dol, check that the SD card is inserted and readable, and confirm the loader still launches from the Homebrew Channel. A missing channel after install usually means the WAD install did not complete — reopen YAWM ME and check whether the title is listed. Do not respond to either problem by installing random additional WADs. The forwarder system has exactly two parts — the channel and the files at the standard path — and methodically checking those two parts resolves nearly every case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the forwarder need updating when USB Loader GX updates?

No. The forwarder only points at apps/usbloader_gx/boot.dol. When you update the loader files to r1283, the same UNEO channel launches the new build automatically.

Can I delete the Homebrew Channel after installing the forwarder?

Do not. The Homebrew Channel remains your management and recovery path for installing, fixing, and removing homebrew — including the forwarder itself. The channel is a convenience, not a replacement.

What does Return To UNEO actually change?

It changes where you land when you exit a game. With Return To set to UNEO, exiting returns you to USB Loader GX so you can pick another game. Without it, you land on the System Menu and relaunch the channel manually.
