How to Install d2x cIOS on Wii — v11-beta3 Slot Guide

USB Loader GX can show menus without any custom IOS, but it cannot actually load games from a USB drive until a cIOS is installed. The current choice is d2x cIOS v11-beta3, released March 22, 2025 by the wiidev d2x-cios project. d2x installs into four IOS slots on the Wii, each built on a different base IOS, and games use those slots to access USB storage, SD cards, and other hardware. This guide explains what each slot is for, how the installer works, and how to verify the result — calmly, with the exact slot map used across this site.

This guide is for original Wii consoles only. Wii U owners must stop here and use the vWii edition instead — the packages are different files and are not interchangeable. Wii Mini owners must also stop: the Mini uses d2xl, not standard d2x, as explained in our Wii Mini guide.

Before You Start — What You Need

  • An original Nintendo Wii with the Homebrew Channel working.
  • An SD card formatted to FAT32 with an apps folder at the root.
  • The Wii package: d2x cIOS v11-beta3 for Wii (GitHub). Backup installer mirror: Mirror (Terabox) — verify you grabbed the Wii build, not the vWii build.
  • An internet connection on the Wii if your installer method downloads bases online, or the offline files your installer package expects — follow the installer prompts rather than improvising file locations.
  • USB Loader GX itself from the Download page: r1283 from GitHub (official).

Wrong console, wrong package: If you are sitting in the Wii U vWii menu, close this guide and open Install d2x cIOS on vWii instead. Installing the Wii package inside vWii can brick the vWii environment.

The Slot Map — What Goes Where

Slot (cIOS)Base IOSTypical use
24838Alternate slot used by some games and homebrew that expect base 38 behavior.
24956The default loader slot. USB Loader GX uses 249 unless you change it.
25057First fallback for individual games that misbehave on 249.
25158Second fallback; also useful for titles that need base 58 USB behavior.

You do not need to memorize the bases to use the loader. You only need to install all four slots as a set, so that the per-game fallback options actually exist when a guide or a game setting asks for them. Installing only 249 leaves you with no fallback the first time a game needs 250.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Download the Wii package. Use the GitHub link above and confirm the file you have is the standard (Wii) v11-beta3 package. If the filename or page mentions vWii, you have the wrong file for this guide.
  2. Copy the installer to the SD card. Extract the download on your computer and copy the d2x installer app folder into SD:/apps/, keeping its folder structure exactly as extracted. The installer should appear in the Homebrew Channel list afterward.
  3. Launch the installer from the Homebrew Channel. Insert the SD card, open the Homebrew Channel, and start the d2x cIOS installer. Read the opening screen and continue to the install menu. Take your time — the installer is menu-driven and there is no benefit to rushing it.
  4. Select the first mapping: slot 248, base 38. In the installer, set the cIOS to install as v11-beta3, the slot as 248, and the base as 38, using the installer’s on-screen controls. Double-check all three values on screen before confirming the install.
  5. Let the install finish completely. The installer downloads or reads the base, patches it, and installs it into the slot. Do not power off the Wii, remove the SD card, or press buttons during this process. Wait for the success message for that slot.
  6. Repeat for 249 with base 56. Return to the install menu and install the same cIOS version into slot 249 using base 56. This is the most important slot — it is the loader default — so verify the numbers twice.
  7. Repeat for 250 with base 57. Install into slot 250 using base 57, again waiting for the success message before moving on.
  8. Repeat for 251 with base 58. Install into slot 251 using base 58. When this one succeeds, all four slots in the standard map are populated.
  9. Exit cleanly and restart the Wii. Leave the installer through its exit option, return to the Homebrew Channel or System Menu, and restart the console once. A clean restart ensures nothing is holding the old IOS state.
  10. Verify inside USB Loader GX. Launch USB Loader GX, open Settings, and check the credits or IOS information your build shows, and confirm the Loader IOS is 249. Then launch a game you own as a test. A successful game launch is the real verification — the installer messages plus a working game mean the job is done.

Installer Tips That Prevent Redos

Keep the Wii connected and stable while the installer works. If your method fetches base IOS files online, a dropped connection mid-install is the usual cause of an error message — fix the connection and rerun that one slot rather than reinstalling everything. Write down which slots succeeded as you go; the installer processes one slot at a time, and after an interruption it is easy to lose track and skip one. If a slot reports an error, note the exact message, restart the installer, and retry that same slot and base combination before changing any values.

After installation, resist the urge to install additional random cIOS versions from old videos. Multiple overlapping cIOS eras on one console create confusing per-game behavior. The four-slot v11-beta3 map in this guide is the current, self-consistent set for USB Loader GX.

Common Mistakes and Safety Notes

The classic mistake is a mismatched pair — the right slot with the wrong base — which is why each step above asks you to read the screen before confirming. The second mistake is power loss during an install; plug the Wii in directly rather than through a flaky power strip for this job. The third is following an old guide that installs d2x v10 into only two slots and then wondering why newer advice about 248 or 251 does not apply. If you previously had v10, installing the v11-beta3 map over it slot by slot is the normal upgrade path, and our update guide explains how loader and cIOS updates relate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I install only slot 249?

The loader will work for many games, because 249 is the default, but you will have no fallback when a game needs a different base. Installing all four slots takes only a few extra minutes and matches every per-game setting you will see in guides.

Can I use this same package inside the Wii U vWii?

No. The vWii requires the separate vWii package. Using the Wii package in vWii can brick the vWii environment. Use the dedicated vWii guide instead.

How do I know which slot a problem game should use?

Leave the global Loader IOS on 249 and change only that game’s setting: try 250 first, then 251, then 248, testing the game each time. Changing one game’s slot does not affect the rest of your library.
