How to Install d2x cIOS on vWii — v11-beta3 (Wii U)

Inside every Wii U there is a vWii — a complete Wii environment with its own system files, its own IOS slots, and its own rules. To run USB Loader GX from a USB drive inside vWii, you need d2x cIOS v11-beta3, but specifically the build packaged for vWii, released March 22, 2025 by the wiidev d2x-cios project. The slot numbers look familiar — 248, 249, 250, 251 — but the underlying package is different from the Wii package, and confusing the two is a genuine brick risk for the vWii side of your console. This guide keeps the vWii install separate, explicit, and verifiable.

Read the warning boxes on this page even if you have installed d2x on a real Wii before. Experience with the Wii version is helpful for understanding the installer menus, but it does not make the Wii files safe in vWii — the opposite is true, because familiar menus make it easy to move too fast.

Before You Start — What You Need

  • A Wii U with the vWii Homebrew Channel installed and working. If vWii homebrew is not set up yet, follow wii.hacks.guide first.
  • An SD card formatted to FAT32.
  • The vWii package only: d2x cIOS v11-beta3 for vWii (GitHub). The Wii package is at a different link on purpose — do not download it for this guide.
  • A vWii NAND backup taken with your current setup’s tools, stored safely. Treat this as required, not optional.
  • USB Loader GX r1283: from GitHub (official), mirror Mirror (Terabox).

Brick warning — Wii files do not belong in vWii: Never install the standard Wii d2x package, Wii system-menu WADs, or Wii themes inside vWii. The vWii environment can be bricked by Wii IOS and WAD files. Every step below uses the vWii package only. If a video or forum post does not clearly distinguish Wii from vWii files, do not follow it on a Wii U.

How the vWii Install Differs from the Wii Install

On an original Wii, a bad IOS experiment can often be recovered with mature tools. Inside vWii, recovery options are narrower and depend heavily on backups made from the Wii U side before anything went wrong. That is the practical difference: not the menu steps, which are similar, but the cost of a mistake. The slot map itself is the same standard layout used across this site — 248 with base 38, 249 with base 56, 250 with base 57, and 251 with base 58 — so per-game advice written for the loader still applies once the vWii build is installed. The loader default remains slot 249.

Another difference is context: you will always enter through the Wii U menu into Wii Mode first. There is no point in the process where you should be installing anything from the Wii U side for this guide, and no point where Wii-side tools should be pointed at vWii files. Keep the two environments mentally separate for the whole job.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Take the NAND backup first. Using the backup method your Wii U homebrew setup provides, back up the vWii NAND and copy the result off the SD card to your computer as well. Confirm the backup files exist before continuing.
  2. Download the vWii package and check its name. Use only the vWii GitHub link above. Before copying anything, confirm the download is the vWii build. If you also have the Wii build on your computer from another console, rename or separate the folders now so they cannot be mixed up at the copying step.
  3. Copy the vWii installer to the SD card. Extract the vWii package and copy its installer app folder into SD:/apps/, preserving the extracted structure. The installer should appear in the vWii Homebrew Channel list.
  4. Enter vWii and launch the installer. From the Wii U menu, open Wii Mode, launch the Homebrew Channel, and start the d2x installer. Read the opening screens slowly and confirm the installer identifies as the vWii edition before installing anything.
  5. Install slot 248, base 38. Select cIOS v11-beta3, slot 248, base 38. Verify all three values on screen, then install and wait for the success message. Do not power off the Wii U during the install.
  6. Install slot 249, base 56. Repeat the process for slot 249 with base 56. This is the loader’s default slot, so check the numbers twice before confirming.
  7. Install slot 250, base 57. Install into slot 250 using base 57 and wait for completion.
  8. Install slot 251, base 58. Install into slot 251 using base 58. With that success message, the full standard map is in place for vWii.
  9. Exit and restart cleanly. Exit the installer, return to the Wii U menu, and re-enter Wii Mode fresh. A clean re-entry avoids judging the install while the previous session’s state is still active.
  10. Verify with the loader. Launch USB Loader GX inside vWii, confirm the Loader IOS is set to 249 in Settings, and launch a game you own from the USB drive as a test. A game that boots and exits cleanly is the verification that matters.

After Installation — vWii-Specific Checks

Set the loader’s Return To option deliberately: since r1282, Wii U Menu is available as a Return To destination, which most Wii U owners prefer. Check the display behavior on your test game as well — r1282 added automatic handling so 4:3-only games are not stretched on vWii, plus a dedicated vWii Screen Mode setting when 16:9 is enabled. If a game looks stretched after this install, look at those display settings before suspecting the cIOS.

If the loader cannot see the USB drive, work through power and ports first: use a Y-cable, try the other rear USB ports, and confirm the drive is FAT32 with MBR and a proper wbfs folder. Drive detection problems in vWii are far more often power or formatting issues than cIOS issues, and reinstalling cIOS should be the last step, not the first. More cases are collected in the Troubleshooting hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

The slot numbers are the same as Wii — so why is the package different?

The slot numbers are just addresses. The code installed into them must match the vWii environment, its bases, and its hardware. The vWii package is built for that environment; the Wii package is not, even though the finished map looks identical on paper.

I already installed d2x on my real Wii. Can I copy that setup to vWii?

No. There is no copying step between consoles. Each environment needs its own install with its own package. Your Wii experience will make the vWii menus familiar, but the files must come from the vWii download.

What if I think the wrong package was already installed in vWii?

Stop installing anything else. Do not try to fix it by layering more WADs or cIOS files on top. Restore from your vWii NAND backup using your Wii U setup’s recovery path, or seek help with your exact backup situation before making further changes.
