USB Loader GX FAQ

Quick answers to the questions readers ask most — versions, installation, cIOS, GameCube support, drives and online play. For anything deeper, start with the setup guide or the troubleshooting hub.

What is USB Loader GX?

USB Loader GX is a free, open-source (GPLv2) game loader for the Nintendo Wii and the Wii U’s vWii mode. It launches your legally owned game backups from a USB drive or SD card with cover art, and it is maintained by the wiidev team on GitHub. This website is an unofficial community hub — not the project’s official site.

What is the latest version of USB Loader GX?

The latest release is v4.0-r1283, published on July 4, 2025. You can get it from the official GitHub release on our download page, where we also publish the file size (11,160,243 bytes) and the official SHA-256 checksum so you can verify the file.

How do I install USB Loader GX?

You need a Wii or vWii with the Homebrew Channel installed, an SD card, and the d2x cIOS. Extract the loader to /apps/usbloader_gx/ on the SD card, install cIOS, and launch it from the Homebrew Channel. Our step-by-step setup guide walks through every stage.

Which cIOS do I need, and in which slots?

Use d2x-v11-beta3: slot 248 with base 38, slot 249 with base 56, slot 250 with base 57, and slot 251 with base 58. Wii U owners must use the separate vWii package — installing the Wii package on vWii (or the other way round) can break the system. See the Wii cIOS guide and the vWii cIOS guide.

Can I use USB Loader GX on a Wii U?

Yes — it runs in the Wii U’s Virtual Wii (vWii) mode. The setup is the same as on a Wii except that you must install the vWii-specific d2x package. Follow the vWii installation guide.

Can USB Loader GX play GameCube games?

Yes, through its integration with Nintendont. USB Loader GX acts as the front end; Nintendont is the program that actually runs GameCube games in Wii mode, with memory-card emulation and support for Bluetooth and USB controllers. Games go in /games/Game Name [ID]/game.iso — see the Nintendont setup guide.

What is the best hard drive format for USB Loader GX?

FAT32 with an MBR partition table and 32 KB clusters. It is the only format that works for both Wii games and GameCube games via Nintendont. Our FAT32 formatting guide and the format comparison explain the alternatives.

Why is USB Loader GX stuck on “Waiting for HDD”?

Usually the drive is in the wrong USB port (use Port 0), not getting enough power (a USB Y-cable fixes most cases), or formatted with a GPT partition table. The full checklist is in our Waiting for HDD fix.

Can I still play Wii games online?

Yes, through Wiimmfi, the community-run replacement for the discontinued Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. USB Loader GX has a Private Server option that can point supported games such as Mario Kart Wii at Wiimmfi. See the Wiimmfi online play guide.

Does USB Loader GX work on the Wii Mini?

It can, but the Wii Mini is a special case: it needs the BlueBomb exploit and the d2xl cIOS — never the standard d2x packages. Read the Wii Mini guide before attempting anything.

Is downloading USB Loader GX legal? Where do I report bugs?

USB Loader GX itself is free open-source software and downloading it is legal. This site does not host or link to game files — only use backups of games you own. Bugs in the loader belong on the official GitHub issue tracker (github.com/wiidev/usbloadergx); questions about this website go through our contact page.
