Priiloader Autoboot to USB Loader GX — The Right Way

Priiloader is a Wii homebrew tool that runs before the System Menu and can autoboot the console into a chosen destination. For USB Loader GX owners, the appeal is obvious: power on, and land directly in your game library. There is, however, one correct way to set this up and one tempting wrong way. The wrong way is installing the USB Loader GX application itself into Priiloader as an installed file. The right way is to autoboot the UNEO forwarder channel booter, so Priiloader hands off to the channel, and the channel forwards to the loader files on your SD card, exactly as it does from the System Menu.

This distinction was reinforced by the r1282 release notes in June 2025, which addressed the Priiloader setup path: do not install the loader body into Priiloader — install and boot the UNEO channel booter instead. This guide follows that approach. It is for original Wii consoles; Priiloader in this form is a Wii tool, not a vWii one.

Before You Start — What You Need

  • An original Wii with the Homebrew Channel, USB Loader GX working, and the UNEO forwarder channel already installed and tested — follow the forwarder guide first if you have not.
  • Priiloader itself, obtained through your existing homebrew setup (for example via ModMii-based tooling or your established homebrew source). Priiloader installation modifies the System Menu boot path, so use a current, trusted copy.
  • A NAND backup. On Wii, a BootMii backup taken before Priiloader work is the standard safety net. Do not skip it.
  • An SD card with the loader at the standard path SD:/apps/usbloader_gx/boot.dol.
  • A GameCube controller or the console Power/Reset buttons for navigating Priiloader if a Wii Remote does not sync at that stage — a common Priiloader quirk worth preparing for.

Do not install the loader DOL into Priiloader: Installing USB Loader GX’s boot.dol as Priiloader’s installed file is the outdated approach the r1282 notes steer you away from. Autoboot the UNEO forwarder channel instead: updates to the loader then require no Priiloader changes at all, because the channel keeps pointing at the SD card files.

Why the Channel Booter Is the Correct Target

Think of the boot chain as three short hops: Priiloader runs first, Priiloader starts the UNEO channel, and the UNEO channel loads USB Loader GX from the SD card. Each hop has one job. When the loader updates — for example to r1283 — only the SD card files change, and the other two hops keep working untouched. When the loader DOL is baked into Priiloader instead, every loader update becomes Priiloader surgery, and a bad file at that stage affects the console before the System Menu even appears. The channel method also keeps a clean escape hatch: change Priiloader’s autoboot setting back to System Menu and the console behaves completely normally again.

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Take the NAND backup. Make the BootMii backup now if you do not have a current one, and store a copy off the SD card. Priiloader changes how the console starts, so this backup is the foundation of the whole guide.
  2. Verify the full chain manually first. From the System Menu, launch the UNEO channel and confirm USB Loader GX opens and a game launches. Autoboot should only automate a chain you have already proven by hand.
  3. Install Priiloader (if not already installed). Launch the Priiloader installer from the Homebrew Channel and follow its prompts. Read its warnings — it replaces the System Menu’s first boot stage with itself, which is exactly what gives it autoboot and brick-protection abilities.
  4. Open Priiloader. Hold Reset while powering on (or use your installer’s entry method) to reach the Priiloader menu. Navigate carefully; if the Wii Remote does not respond here, use a GameCube controller or the front-panel buttons as your installer documentation describes.
  5. Find the autoboot setting. In Priiloader’s Settings, locate the Autoboot option. The choices typically include System Menu, Homebrew Channel, and installed/channel options depending on version.
  6. Set autoboot to the UNEO channel booter. Choose the option that boots the USB Loader GX forwarder channel (UNEO) — in setups where Priiloader lists a channel booter or an installed channel target, select that UNEO target. Do not use the Install File option to load the loader’s boot.dol as the autoboot file.
  7. Set Return To behavior sensibly. If your Priiloader version offers a Return To setting for when the autoboot target exits, set it consistently (System Menu is the predictable choice at this layer). Inside USB Loader GX itself, keep Return To set to UNEO as described in the forwarder guide, so exiting a game returns to the loader.
  8. Save settings and test a cold boot. Save in Priiloader, power the console fully off, then power on and touch nothing. The console should pass through Priiloader, start the UNEO channel, and land in USB Loader GX.
  9. Test the escape hatch. Power off, hold Reset while powering on, and confirm you can still reach the Priiloader menu and boot to the normal System Menu. An autoboot setup you cannot interrupt is a trap, not a convenience — verify the interruption works while everything is healthy.
  10. Test one game end to end. From the autobooted loader, launch a game, play briefly, and exit. You should return according to the loader’s Return To setting (UNEO), confirming the chain works in both directions.

Keeping the Setup Healthy Across Updates

When you update USB Loader GX, update only the SD card files as in the r1283 update guide — Priiloader and the channel need no changes. When Priiloader itself updates, re-check the autoboot target afterward, because setting layouts can change between versions. And if you ever remove the SD card, expect autoboot to fail gracefully or stall at the forwarder stage: the chain depends on those files, which is another reason the standard folder path matters. If a cold boot ever loops, hold Reset to enter Priiloader, set autoboot back to System Menu, and troubleshoot from a normal boot using the Troubleshooting hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why not just install the USB Loader GX file directly in Priiloader?

Because then every loader update means changing Priiloader’s installed file, and a problem file breaks the earliest boot stage. Booting the UNEO channel instead keeps Priiloader stable while the loader files on SD can be updated, replaced, or fixed freely.

How do I undo autoboot if I change my mind?

Hold Reset while powering on to open Priiloader, change Autoboot back to System Menu, and save. The console then boots normally. Nothing about the loader or channel needs to be uninstalled.

My Wii Remote does not work in the Priiloader menu. Is it broken?

Not necessarily — remote sync at the Priiloader stage is a known quirk. Try a synced remote again after a normal boot, or navigate with a GameCube controller or the console’s Power and Reset buttons, as Priiloader supports those inputs.
